The 99p`Delight a Cosina 35E

I picked up this lovely simple cam for 99p I wasnt sure if it would work, so I put in batteries and a test film.

Well I can control the point of focus it being a rangefinder and change film speed it has a b setting but no way to change the apature. Well it works except that the light meter underexposes by about half a stop. In use it is fast and quiet, All the the pictures in the previous post are from this cam.

Or installing Linux the Simply mepis way. I am a big fan of the Linux ideal but never got it to work before. I had heard that it was getting more user friendly and had thought of giving it a try. Then a few days ago I read that Lightzone was free on Linux. For anyone who has not tried Lightzone or heard about it look it up you may as I did find it an absolutely superb image editor. It works to me in a more intuitive manor but on my laptop (P4 512ram) it was slowish under windows. So I tried ubuntu Linux but could not get it to work (my fault) so I tried Simply Mepis and then found a set of instructions to load it in the terminal window. So I have now got it to work.
What a difference Lightzone now zips along as do other graphical apps Ive tried but not evaluated enough to give an opinion. Lightzone is however one of the best photo apps I have ever used, if not the best. The zone mapping tool is absolutely superb. If your thinking of giving it a try I say do it just make sure all your valuable data is safe.

Shooting with 2 DSLRs that is. Today the light was not good and so I didnt get any results good enough or that im happy with. But I can give a comparison of the 2 cams, Well there both superb The Minolta with its AS is great with cheep telephoto lenses and in low light the viewfinder is better too. The Canon has much faster and more desisive AF and is far quieter, Both cams are great.
It can not be underestimated the pleasure of using two cams. On the Canon I had the cheep Kit lens, not as bad as some would make out but not great either. On the Minolta there was a 100-300 zoom (£10 off the bay). This set up is great for me as I can just pick up the right body and snap away, Less lens changes less chances of sensor dust far greater speed of use. Of course being a big fan of cheep equipment makes running 2 cams a lot easier id not be able to do it with higher end cams.

New Cam

Well after much deliberation I got a new cam, well ok its secondhand but it will do the job. Its another Canon 300D that was suposed to be a body only with out battery, charger and charger but came with the kit lens and a 128mb compact flash. I have 2 spare batteries and a charger so result. The money saved on buying a latest and greatest new cam can be put better use on glass and this cam cost me peanuts for the difference I can get a very nice lens.

The Headache-A new Cam

Looking for a new dslr but its so hard to decide which one, I have a great Minolta but even though the Sony is the logical choice I just dont fancy it and there lies the rub. I have one great lens for the Minolta and so Im not realy tied to the mount, also I dont realy need 10 megapix. So is there a clear stand out cam out of the rest well no not realy despite what all their respective fanboys say. There isnt realy a stand out not worth buying one either. Of the four other systems they all have some great points and a few bad ones.
The Canon has blistering fast AF a superb sensor and just because of Canons position is the safest bet, on the down side is cost good Canon lenses seem to cost more and the kit lens is the worst of the lot (only a temp prob though)and although I had a Canon stolen it is perhaps my least favoured option at this moment in time.
The Nikon has a lot going for it great range of lenses a well priced body that also feels solid and well made like the Canon it is a very safe choice. But Im not so sure of the viewfinder.
The Olympus gives great colours and has a self cleaning sensor, probably the best kit lens a realy light weight body. However it is more expensive to go wide and it is noisier at high isos (but this is of no wory to me).
Last there is the Pentax ths has the best viewfinder of the lot(even better than my Minolta. The AF is quite zippy and here are some lenses to die for. It also takes AA bateries which to me is a big big bonus. The main worry with it is will Pentax still be making cameras in a couple of years.
Now given that I can get almost any independant Lens in Nikon or Canon mounts the fewest in the Olympus mount and somewhere in the middle with the Pentax, But I can get all the Glass I want in all but the Oly mount and I can even use some old manual focus lenses on the Pentax with no impairment on the metering and that realy apeals.
The generic battery in the Pentax does apeal but so does the ease of swapping on all the others. I have a little Olympus point and shoot (C5050) and the coours out of it are superb as it seems are the colours out of the Oly dslr's. Both the Oly and Canon take Compact Flash cards and I have loads I have no SD cards but they are cheep now so I guess it does not matter. So My head goes round in circles deciding which one.
